Paul Layaoen
Paul Abitong Layaoen, 91, of Hilo, died Feb. 1 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 22, 1927, in Bataac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was employed by the Laupahoehoe Sugar Company and he retired as a supervisor at the Hamakua Sugar Company.
Friends may call on Feb. 22 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel, visitation from 5-7 p.m.; wake service at 7 p.m. Friends may call on Feb. 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo, visitation 9-10 a.m.; celebration of Mass at 10 a.m. Burial at the Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire and flowers are welcomed.
He is survived by wife, Grace Andres of Hilo; daughters, Shirley (Buel) McCoy of Kona, Cheryl Layaoen Midel of Pahoa, Josalinda (Jeff) Ampong of Okinawa, Japan, and Josephine (Henry) Pedrina of Oahu; sons, Paul (Lauri) Layaoen of Canada and Edward (Elizabeth) Layaoen of Washington; step-daughters, Donna (Richard) Stillman of Hilo, Dyrell (Wesley) of Oahu, Linda Lucero and Arlene Taaca of California, Mary Ann (Ronald) Oliviera of Honolulu; step-sons, Ignacio “Joey” Andres of Hilo and Robert (Elaine) Asia of Kanehoe, Oahu; 24 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
